  The parts of the expressions connected by the signs of   "+"   and  "- "  are called the terms of the expressions. In  X+Y, there are two terms  X  and Y  of the expression. In  X-2Y +YZ  there are 3 terms  X,  -2Y  and  YZ. Polynomial   is a  monomial  or sum of monomials, each called term of the polynomial. The degree of polynomial is the greatest degree of its terms. The degree of  nonzero  constant term is 0. The constant 0 does not have degree. e.g.  6  has  zero degree   whereas  0  has no degree.

introduction to algebra Algebra A variable is a letter or symbol such as x, y, z,..... that stands for a number for example the height of a student is a variable , as it varies from student to student. A quantity which has a fixed numerical value is called a constant e.g.3, 7, 0, -9are constants. In the expression  2x + 5, 5 are constants and x is variable.
